Tamil Nadu Covid-19 tally crosses 1 lakh mark



CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu breached 1 lakh cases on Friday with the State reporting the second consecutive day of over 4000 cases, the State media bulletin confirmed.

As many as 4329 new cases of Coronavirus were reported on Friday, while the number stood at 4343 on Thursday. The total number of cases in the State stands at 1,02,721.

The death toll too rose to 1385 after 63 more people succumbed to the infection on Friday. Of the 63 deaths, Chennai accounted for 33.

The bulletin said 2357 people were discharged on Friday, which is slightly lower than the number on Thursday which was 3095 recoveries. Total recoveries in the State stood at 58,378.

Chennai continues to be the worst affected district in the State with 64,689 cases in all and 2082 cases on Friday alone. Chengalpet recorded 330 new cases while Madurai had 287 cases on Friday.

Chennai and neighbouring districts like Chengelpet, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram have been under an intense 12-day lockdown from June 19. This lockdown has been extended till July 5 after which there will be easing of restrictions, much like what was done during the Unlock 1.0 period. However, the general state-wide lockdown is on till July 31.

The State bulletin said 34,242 persons were tested on Friday.
