Non-departmental duties: Power engineers to extend agitation

Power engineers of the Central zone comprising Ludhiana and Mandi Gobindgarh would keep their mobile phones switched off every day from 5.00 pm to 9.00 am from tomorrow onwards in protest against the “arrogant attitude” of the district authorities of Ludhiana with regard to deployment of engineers for non-departmental duties.

The protest would be extended to the entire state from June 1 onwards with the district administrations and the managements of power companies being solely responsible for any adverse effect on power supply in the state.

PSEB Engineers’ Association (PSEBEA) president Jasvir Singh Dhiman and general secretary Ajay Pal Singh Atwal said the district administrations had been assigning non-departmental duties such as checking of alcohol smuggling, procurement of wheat in mandis, other administrative tasks like issuing curfew passes, shift duties for monitoring quarantine centres to the engineers and technical staff of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL).

“Earlier, in anticipation of the coming summer and paddy season and of course, with the intervention of the principal secretary, Department of Power, Punjab, and the managements of the power companies such duties of engineers and technical staff were taken back to enable them take care of providing 24×7 power supply which was more essential,” said the PSEBEA functionaries.

They said, however, the Ludhiana district authorities had overlooked the critical status of supply in a highly populated city and also the approaching paddy sowing season while deploying a majority of engineers on non-departmental duties for which staff from other departments could have been easily managed. It seemed the district administration (of Ludhiana) was not bothered about reliable power supply to the consumers, healthcare facilities and farmers.
