Criminal case on Ludhiana Mayor and Commissioner for Buddha Nullah pollution, out on bail

NGT team visited Ludhiana on 1 May to examine the Buddha Nullah. It was found from the investigations that the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Jamalpur was lying closed and the untreated water was being released into the Buddha Nullah.

Thus, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had booked a criminal case against Ludhiana municipal corporation Commissioner Kanwalpreet Kaur Brar, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu and two others.

They had been booked under the Water Act on the charges of pollution the Buddha Nullah as the sewerage treatment plant set up was non-functional.

Mayor Sandhu said to Indian Express, “We have secured bail in the criminal case. We have sought time till 2021 to enhance the capacity of the STPs and also to make them operational. We will fulfill our promise well in time”.
