Assam: Curfew imposed in Cachar district after clashes between two groups

GUWAHATI: Following incidents of stone pelting between two groups leading to escalation of tension on Sunday, the Cachar district administration in Assam has clamped curfew in the areas under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town with immediate effect.

In an order issued to this effect on Monday, District Magistrate, Keerthi Jalli, said apprehending breach of peace and tranquility, curfew has been promulgated ‘prohibiting the total movement of persons’ in areas under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town with immediate effect.

Two groups indulged in pelting stones at each other at Ghoniwala area of Silchar town on Sunday evening. Assam Police, CRPF and other security personnel rushed to the area of incident and brought the situation under control.

As simmering tension prevails and there is every likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquility, the administration has clamped curfew in the areas falling under Malugram Police Outpost.

However, the order exempts magistrates on duty, police, military and para military forces, health functionaries, including doctors and para medics.

The order that comes into force with immediate effect shall continue to remain in force until further orders.

Minister for Environment & Forest Parimal Suklabaidya urged the Deputy Commissioner, DIG (Southern Range) and Superintendent of Police to visit the place of the incident once the curfew is lifted to instill confidence among the local people. He demanded strong action against the miscreants as per law and to quell rumours at work.

The Minister said on hearing about the incident, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal rang him up, the DIG and the DC and took stock of the situation and asked them to step up efforts to restore normalcy in the troubled spot.

Suklabaidya also asked the civil and police administrations to keep a tab on the social media and to take necessary action against those posting objectionable posts and spreading misinformation.
